Pain Management with Microcurrent |

In dealing with pain, Family Doctors of
DuPage attempts to use the most natural, non-invasive, and highly
innovative approaches that work with the human body’s own line of
healing. Often treatments with infrared mineral heat relaxes muscles.
Sometimes we use anti-inflammatory nutritional supplements or
supplements designed to speed healing and repair.
Often used is microcurrent electrical nerve stimulation (MENS), treatments which can speed recovery from injuries, decrease swelling, accelerate healing and most of all relieve pain. This therapy involves using smaller amounts of current, in the microamp range (one-millionth of an amp). This is 1000 times smaller than traditional forms of electrotherapy. This current is so small that you often can't even feel it. Microcurrent can penetrate the damaged cells and balance the cells electrically. When a muscle experiences any trauma, it goes into a spasm to protect itself. This spasm decreases its blood supply which reduces the amount of oxygen and nutrients that reach it. Additionally, metabolic waste products accumulate with the decreased circulation. All this results in pain. MENS treatments are performed in the office and a portable MENS machine may be rented for home use. Some patients have even purchased one for their own use. |
